Extended Restrictions Grant

5 October 2021

Cheshire West businesses will benefit from an extra £1.9 million after the council successfully distributed another round of support grant to those impacted by Covid-19 lockdowns, bringing the total allocated to £137m since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

Cheshire West secured the top-up grant from government after allocating £9.9 m in discretionary grants to 4482 Cheshire West businesses ahead of the 30 July 2021 deadline.

The council will now use the extra funding to provide direct financial support to businesses who have still been financially impacted by restrictions due to the delayed reopening in July 2021 and those businesses who have been affected by staff having too self-isolate.

In addition to grant funding the Council has created partnerships with a number key partners including the Business Improvement Districts and West Cheshire Chamber of Commerce has developed a programme of wider support to help Cheshire West economy recover from the pandemic.

Measures include delivery of a start-up programme aimed at encouraging new business starts, a scale up programme to assist businesses bring forward growth plans, within key sectors, and an investor fund to retain and attract new investment into the Borough.

The proposals also include support to address skills and recruitment issues in key sectors through funding to create and deliver short term in-house or accredited training for businesses. The Council is keen to encourage those not in work or training to take up jobs as part of our its commitment to building an inclusive economy. These measures will be launched with partners during the early part of October.

The allocation of grant funding is part of a comprehensive package of support the Councill has delivered.  This includes a pilot project to support the development of the LoyalFree app to encourage footfall and visitors back to key centres within rural areas.  Also, the installation of temporary structures within key locations to support culture, and leisure activities to operate in a safe and secure manner.

Councillor Gahan, Cabinet Member for Finance said “Restrictions have lifted  but the economic impact of the pandemic has been devastating and will be felt by our businesses for very a long time – that’s why it’s vital that we all get behind them. The extra funding the council has secured will help us to continue to support the recovery of businesses alongside supporting our town and city centres, and set Cheshire West on the path of growth once again.”
