The world’s chemical industry converts raw materials, such as fossil fuels, metals, minerals, and biomass into the thousands of products essential to modern life. All manufacturing sectors are in some way dependant on the products of the chemical sector. Chemical products include bulk chemicals, used as building blocks for more complex molecules, and fine and speciality chemicals, which are used in consumer products such as personal care products, paints, pharmaceuticals, and many others. The United Kingdom has a well-developed speciality chemicals industry with companies producing many types of ingredients and formulated products for downstream industry.
