Marking this year’s Road Safety Week from charity Brake, Tiger Trailers of Winsford’s budding apprentices had their first taste of its road safety initiatives when they helped deliver potentially life-saving education to schools, and additionally when they experienced truck driving with the Road Haulage Association’s simulator - blending together two facets that are close to the hearts of the company’s founders.
St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Winsford received visits from the Tiger Safety Team, some of the company’s apprentices, and its mascot, Tiger Ted, who used engaging classroom lessons combined with an outside session involving a large vehicle and a zebra crossing, to really imprint Tiger’s ‘STOP, LOOK, BE SEEN’ programme in the youngsters’ minds.
The school also visited Tiger during November, its Year 6 students not only receiving additional road safety lessons, but also seeing the firm’s production lines and support functions up close, engaging with the various departments involved directly and indirectly with automotive manufacturing, and being inspired for their future careers.
Martine Gum, Headteacher at St. Joseph's, comments: “Our Year 6 children loved visiting Tiger Trailers. The sessions were informative and engaging. Both children and staff found the sessions beneficial in developing a better understanding of road safety. The sessions continue to be talked about in school now, a number of weeks later. The visits to school by Tiger Trailers are also hugely beneficial and the addition of a 'real' tiger adds to the excitement!”
As part of Tiger’s road safety-focussed November, The Road Haulage Association (RHA) brought its truck simulator to Tiger Trailers’ site and the Winsford manufacturer’s apprentices learnt what it is like to drive an HGV and trailer in various environments and undertaking different manoeuvres.
Alison Cartwright, Tiger’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, comments: “We put on a few different events at Tiger, covering road safety and bringing young people into the world of work to hopefully give tangible aspirations for their futures. We are very excited to develop and continue this side of Tiger again next year in our local Winsford community.”
Tiger Trailers, a lorry trailer manufacturer based in Cheshire has, since 2021, become known in its local area and the wider automotive industry for its safety education work. The £100m company established in 2014 also relaunched an apprenticeship programme in September 2025, welcoming 20 young men and women set to become the next generation of coachbuilders.
Tiger actively encourages its customers and suppliers to integrate safety features such as cyclist side panels, additional lighting, and various camera systems, as part of the product range it builds, and the company’s ‘STOP, LOOK, BE SEEN’ programme is starting to be adopted by some of its large fleet customers.
