New technology will help improve safety for road workers across the UK.
Winsford-based SRL Traffic Systems has signed a three-year contract to supply Go Traffic Management (GTM) with REMOS, a mobile system believed to be the UK's first remotely operated mobile traffic signals.
The technology is designed to better protect road workers by reducing their exposure to live traffic lanes and is the result of a collaboration between the two North West companies.
Ben Parsons, business development director at SRL, said: "We are delighted to be working with GTM to help support the industry’s ongoing quest to improve road worker safety while also helping to cut congestion on the UK’s roads."
REMOS units will be deployed to GTM depots nationwide for use by highways authorities, utilities, and construction contractors.
Currently, mobile traffic signals are often managed manually by personnel in active traffic lanes - a risk-laden task.
In 2023, more than 12,300 road workers reported assaults by road users, with over half saying they experience abuse weekly.
SRL, Europe’s largest manufacturer of mobile intelligent transport system solutions, developed REMOS in partnership with GTM.
The system streams live camera feeds from control boxes on site to SRL’s control centre, where staff monitor and adjust traffic signal timings remotely.
This reduces the need for road workers to operate signals in dangerous environments and comes at a time when the industry faces a shortage of road personnel, contributing to project delays.
SRL estimates that REMOS improves traffic flow around roadworks by 30 to 50 per cent compared to traditional, manually operated systems.
The Winsford firm has earned RoSPA awards for roadworker health and safety for five years running, and GTM operates its Be: SAFE campaign to promote workforce safety.
