Britain's Best Cake baker to open city centre shop

Fresh from winning Britain's Best Cake 2025, a baker is set to open her new store in Chester this weekend.

Laura Johnson’s now-famous chocolate cake will be available at Abba Cakes in Lower Bridge Street, among a range of tempting treats and hot drinks.

The Columbian-born patisserie chef and business owner will open the doors of her new cake shop on Saturday, October 11, marking a bold expansion for her growing brand after success at her first shop in Hoylake.

However, it’s not just about selling cake for Laura, it’s about creating connection.

The new shop will have indoor seating and provide a welcoming space for visitors to gather in the city centre, where she has long held ambitions of opening a location.

Laura said: “Upon my first trip to Chester, I knew I would open a business here one day – I said if I ever had a cake shop, this would be the perfect place, it’s so beautiful.

“I like how people perceive independent businesses here. I love how people tend to appreciate the effort put into things and I dream of Abba Cakes being the cake shop in Chester.

The menu will evolve seasonally with autumn’s offering including themed bakes.

Customers can also expect the signature cakes, brownies and traybakes that the brand is known for and a new drinks menu featuring Columbian-style coffee and other hot beverages.

Abba Cakes will open on Saturday, October 11, from 10am.
