Chester Railway Station Refurbishment

Transport for Wales (TfW) are the operator of Chester Railway Station and have a station improvement programme for several locations across the TfW Wales and Borders rail service network, including Chester.

The Chester station work includes upgrades aimed at enhancing the overall customer experience of visitors to Chester, including new branding and signage, a new passenger assist point, cycle stands, roaming mics and hearing loop systems, new CCTV system across the whole station, toilet refurbishments on the concourse and on platforms 4 and 7, a
new changing place toilet, water refill unit, platform and concourse seating and waste facilities.

New customer information screens will be installed throughout the station in current and additional locations. These will increase the train service information on the platforms and within the station waiting rooms. New screens will be installed for onward journeys, including bus information, and an interactive screen will be installed within the concourse.

Improvement works within the concourse also include repurposing of the ticket office to create a new retail unit for the future, a new rental unit, a new customer service desk with ticket selling facilities, additional ticket vending machines and a repositioned gate line with additional standard and wide aisle gates.  A new quiet room will also be introduced as a place for customers who require a safe, isolated space while waiting for their train.

A work site compound will be in place during these improvement works from June until the work is complete. This will be located in the Chester West car park and will result in a reduction in car park spaces available from Saturday, 27 May 2023. Chester Station East car park will be unaffected.

Signage and hoardings will be erected at the station advising of these significant improvement works, and communications will be provided at the station, onboard services and online, to advise of any temporary changes to accommodate the work on site at the station.

Passengers are encouraged to plan in extra time when travelling via Chester station to allow for potential disruption during this time.

The work will commence early in June 2023 and is expected to be completed by early 2024.

TfW are working closely with industry and local partners to minimise any disruption or noise during these works for the local community and station users.

TfW are also holding a series of ‘Meet the Manager’ sessions at Chester station, which will be hosted on the concourse. These sessions are taking place on:

• Thursday, 1 June: 12pm – 7pm
• Friday, 16 June: 9am – 3pm
• Wednesday, 21 June: 12pm – 7pm
