Bread and Butter - a flavoursome and hearty Chester bistro

Tucked away in Rufus Court in the centre of Chester is a small but perfectly formed bistro and brunch spot.

Bread and Butter will be no secret to anyone who pays attention to the annual Taste Cheshire Awards – winning Best Newcomer in September 2025, just four months after opening.

Owner April takes a few moments to talk to me about the restaurant’s approach.

This focuses on ‘traditional hearty British flavours’ and locally sourced ingredients.

Updates are made to the menu regularly, such as changing soup, scotch egg, and pie dishes, and Bread and Butter pride themselves on making the most of seasonal produce.

April, formerly head chef of Greenhouse – which was based at the location until a refurb last year – says that she values quality over quantity, and this is reflected across the pared back menus.

For breakfast, you can find the likes of your traditional full English, in both original (£15.35) and vegetarian (£12.50) guises, David Joinson’s smoked BLT (£7.50), Slavic style (£8.75) – an intriguing mix of cucumber, chorizo, cottage cheese and scrambled eggs on sourdough – and Greek yoghurt with honey, seasonal berries, pumpkin seeds and granola (£6.50).

As I told April and Sam before I left, it was good enough to come back for on its own.

The importance of locally sourced produce is clear to see just in the title of this dish, and everything about the sandwich is about quality elements cooked and assembled well.

The bread from Bear Bakery is fantastic, the stack of rashers - which are crisped on the outside - carry a deep smoky flavour, and fresh tomato – there's no chalky, soft tomato slices here.

Bread and Butter also has a range of bottled beers, and Stella Artois and Camden Stout on draft (£5 and £5.50 a pint, respectively), along with wine and other hot and cold soft drinks.
