Plans have been submitted for a £140m scheme to introduce a new advanced anaerobic Digestion facility at Ellesmere Port Wastewater Treatment Works.
If approved, the facility will be upgraded to replace an existing anaerobic digestion unit with updated technology which will increase the amount of biogas that is generated from wastewater sludge while using less energy to do so.
Advanced anaerobic digestion units break down material faster and more completely than standard systems, they also reach higher temperatures which destroys harmful bacteria and reduces the volume of sludge left over at the end.
Tom Lissett, United Utilities’ bioresources and green energy director, said: "The upgraded facility will play an important role in meeting future wastewater treatment requirements while helping to reduce carbon emissions.
"It is designed to deliver benefits now and enable us to deliver future innovations, including the ability to increase biogas production and capture CO2 when new technologies become more readily available."
